Lucille McWherter Senior Center was opened in October 1989 in order to serve the aging population  of the East Memphis Community. The Center was named for the mother of former Tennessee Governor Ned McWherter. The Governor continued to support the Center until his  death in April 2011.
Funded by the City of Memphis, the McWherter Senior Center falls under the City of Memphis Division of Parks and Neighborhoods within the City Government. The City officials continue to remain very active and supportive of the Center.
